Geography of Korba

Korba located at 22.35° North latitude and 82.68° East longitude has an average elevation of approximately 252 meters which is equal to 826 feet. This city is the major source of electricity in the state of Chhattisgarh. The district of Korba is situated in the northern part of the state of Chhattisgarh and is surrounded by the districts Surguja, Koria, Bilaspur, Janjgir etc. The districts headquarter of Korba is situated approximately 200 KM. far from the capital city of the state of Chhattisgarh that is Raipur. Korba city is well known for “Kosa” which is a special variety of silk that is used for producing one of the best qualities of cloth in the entire world. This particular cloth having a shiny glaze and being light in weight is used to make Sarees, Kurtas, Shirts, Salwar-Suits and many other garments ethnic wear as well as casual wear. The city of Korba is also famous for Korva tribes who dwell here. Some of the large towns in the district of Korba include Kartala, Pali Katghora and Chhuri.

Location of Korba

Most of the land in the region of Korba has plateau from Maikal ranges of Satpura hills is low and high and open. In this open land, the biggest area is spread near Pasan. The river Hasdeo has three tributaries that are Ahiran, Gajechorai and Tan. There are small obstructions on the banks of the rivers that are the thin forest area and the bastties. This particular area’s most important hill which is the Karela Hill is of 3253 Ft. /991Mtr in height. The slope of the valleys at Hasdeo and Gage to the north of Katghora is very less and joins the District of Surguja in the north. The rivers Tan and Chorai join the River Hasdeo from the opposite directions that is from the West and the East. The Gurudwari Hill, Matin Hill, Janta Hill and Dhajag Hill are situated in the northern Banks.Korba city is famous for its coal mines namely Gevra Area which is one of the biggest coal mines in Asia, Dipka Area and Kusmunda Area, all of which is located in the coalfield of Korba, power plants including CSEB East – West, NTPC, and Balco Aluminium Plant.

Climate of Korba

The district of Korba falls under the hot temperate zone and thus it experiences very dry and hot climate. The summer season here starts from the month of April to the mid of June month. Rainy season in this region is due to the South-West Monsoon which starts from mid of June month up till the end of September month. The average rainfall in this region is 1506.7 mm and the normal rainfall is 1287.6 mm.

Demography of Korba

Accordingto the census record of the year 2011 the district of Korba district has a population of approximately 1,206,563 and ranks 395th of a total of 640 districts in India. The population density of this district is 183 inhabitants per square kilometer or 470 inhabitants per sq meter. The population growth rate in this region over the decade that is from 2001 to 2011 was 19.25%. Korba region has a sex ratio of about 971 females for every 1000 males and the literacy rate here is of 73.22%.

Rivers and Forest Cover in Korba

The Hasdeo River is the main river which flows through the district of Korba. This particular river starts from Pathar situated in the Valley of Chhota Nagpur and its length is of 233 kms and drainage area is 9856 km2. Its tributaries include Tan, Gagechorai and Ahiran. It is the most important and the largest river in Korba. It flows from the Coal Area of Chhattisgarh to Champa and from Champa it flows to Sivrinarayn to meet River Mahanadi. The Hasdeo River is a tributary of River Mahanadi which flows through the state of Chattisgarh. This river joins the Mahanadi which is near to Bilaigarh. Across this river, the Hasdeo Bango Dam is constructed. The Hasdeo River originates about 910 meter above the sea level in a place approximately 10 km from Sonhat in the district of Sarguja district in Chhattisgarh. The major tributary of the Hasdeo River is Gej River.

Forests play a very major role in the social as well as financial structure of the city of Korba. This region is quite rich in terms of forest wealth. The entire district of Korba has two forest divisions Katghora and Korba.

Mineral Resources in Korba

Coal is the most important mineral resource found in this region. There are few number of coal belts in the region of Korba. Coal has been the sole contribution for the development throughout the region. The coal reserves found in this region have resulted in the establishment of world renowned power stations and collieries. It is estimated that the coal reserves in this region are spread over an area of approximately 625 Sq. Km. There are in all three layers of the coal here including 19.8 meter, 21.2 Meter and 36.60 meter. Apart from the underground mining, open cast mining is also carried out in Korba. Korba produces highest quality coal which started from the year 1947. Surveys constructed here show that Korba contains about 151432.9 Lakh Ton of Coal spread throughout the region. From Korba coal mines, coal is transported to Bhilai as well as Korba Power Plant. The main area of Korba coal mines includes Surakachhar, Rajgamar, Manikpur, Dhelwadih, Kusmunda, Gevra Project.

Geographical location of Korba

Bauxite: Bauxite is another mineral resource found in this region which is the raw material for Aluminiun Metal. It is found in the area of patuka Pahad in the district of Korba This Phutka Pahad is located in the borders of Churi Zamindari area, which is situated to the east of Uproda Zamindari area. In the Patuka Pahad region, Bauxite Ore alumina percentage is comparatively more and can be classified as pink and brown pesolite bauxite. Bauxite found in this region also contains Titanium. This particular type of bauxite is formed from the Deccan Basalt Lava. Apart from this other varieties of boulders and bauxite are found in the Mahadev Hills, Ladai Hills and Janata Hills and the good type of pisolite bauxite is found in the Ranaikhet Hills, Ponkhara Hill and peaks of Karela, Gour Dulari. Such variety of Bauxite is much better than the other variety of bauxite found in Phutka Pahad. The uniqueness of the bauxite found here in Korba is that it contains less than 3% of silica, 8 to 10% litania, 55% alumina and 4 to 8% iron ore.
